Sue Powell, Landscape Designer

ELASue found her affinity for plants and the natural world at a very young age, starting with an interest in California wildflowers and family backyard gardens. She has undergraduate and graduate degrees in anthropology, with an emphasis in ecology and the origins of plant domestication and farming.

After settling in Santa Cruz, Sue studied environmental planning at UCSC and horticulture and landscape design at Cabrillo College with instructors Lisa McAndrews and Rich Merrill. Sue coordinated hands-on garden science programs for elementary schools in Santa Cruz. She was an early advocate for organic and sustainable methods of landscape maintenance and assists clients transform their landscapes by creating flourishing, healthy, diverse habitats.

As a member of the Streetscape Task Force, Sue contributed to the post-earthquake landscape design for Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz. She was an active member of the San Lorenzo Urban River Plan Task Force and contributed insight and perspectives to the habitat restoration plan. Sue was also a founding member of the Executive Committee for the Ecological Landscaping Association, California Chapter and assisted with outreach and community education.

Sue was a landscape designer and consultant for Sierra Azul Nursery and Gardens for many years. She started Mariposa Landscaping in 1993 and manages projects throughout Central California. Sue enjoys creating beautiful gardens for her clients.
